He Will Be My Ruin by K.A. Tucker
A woman who almost had it all…
On the surface, Celine Gonzalez had everything a twenty-eight-year-old woman could want: a one-bedroom apartment on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, a job that (mostly) paid the bills, and an acceptance letter to the prestigious Hollingsworth Institute of Art, where she would finally live out her dream of becoming an antiques appraiser for a major auction house. All she had worked so hard to achieve was finally within her reach. So why would she kill herself?
A man who was supposed to be her salvation…
Maggie Sparkes arrives in New York City to pack up what’s left of her best friend’s belongings after a suicide that has left everyone stunned. The police have deemed the evidence conclusive: Celine got into bed, downed a lethal cocktail of pills and vodka, and never woke up. But when Maggie discovers a scandalous photograph in a lock box hidden in Celine’s apartment, she begins asking questions. Questions about the man Celine fell in love with. The man she never told anyone about, not even Maggie. The man Celine believed would change her life.
Until he became her ruin.
On the hunt for evidence that will force the police to reopen the case, Maggie uncovers more than she bargained for about Celine’s private life—and inadvertently puts herself on the radar of a killer. A killer who will stop at nothing to keep his crimes undiscovered.
Sadly I hadn't read a K.A. Tucker book in a long-ass time. And this book was a reminder at how dumb, dumb, DUMB I am for being on an unintentional hiatus. I had forgotten at how damn brilliant and amazing Tucker is.
Let's start with the writing. Tucker is flawless and smooth with her story telling. Not a moment of lapse in flow, not a detail missed in keeping my attention and I was utterly useless in straying from this story and getting anything at all done while reading this book.
As for the story itself. Every single chapter left me with my jaw hanging open and chills with a new reveal; a new twist; a new discovery. Almost every final line of each chapter left me with physical goosebumps. And by chills and goosebumps... I'm talking about the thrills kind, the suspense kind. This is not your lovey, dovey romance.
The characters were perfectly described. The scenes were on par (is that the right saying?). The plot was insanely unreal. And the telling of the plot quite honestly blew my mind. I cannot come up with a single bad thing to say about this book. I'm actually just kind of speechless, period.
I dunno. I think Tucker will be my ruin.
This book is utterly majestic. That's the only way to summarize.
*side note: The audible version is amazing. Perfect narrator.
