Magic Binds (Kate Daniels #9) by Ilona Andrews

Mercenary Kate Daniels knows all too well that magic in post-Shift Atlanta is a dangerous business. But nothing she’s faced could have prepared her for this…

Kate and the former Beast Lord Curran Lennart are finally making their relationship official. But there are some steep obstacles standing in the way of their walk to the altar…

Kate’s father, Roland, has kidnapped the demigod Saiman and is slowly bleeding him dry in his never-ending bid for power. A Witch Oracle has predicted that if Kate marries the man she loves, Atlanta will burn and she will lose him forever. And the only person Kate can ask for help is long dead.

The odds are impossible. The future is grim. But Kate Daniels has never been one to play by the rules…

Pet’s $0.02

This was everything I had hoped for and more! Every single one of the books in this series is a dip into fantastical realms where shifters and vampires and all manor of magic’s are possible… It’s a magical world that fights back and forth with the world of technology for dominance, and Kate Daniels is a major player in that world.

All of the characters are back, with a lot of the same problems and a whole host of new ones. Life has gone on, even as destruction looms in the form of Kate’s father Roland. I’m kind of conflicted about Roland. He’s a monster. He doesn’t know the meaning of no. He only sees black and white and none of the wonderful shades of grey that Kate has tried to explain to him. He only sees one way to do things. He meddles, he plots, he subverts and he loves his daughter. And there’s the rub… He does love Kate and he’s proud of how she’s grown magically… I wanted them to have a good father/daughter relationship…but I know it’s never going to happen. They’re too different and have completely different ideas of how they fit into the world.

The romance in this story sneaks up on you. It starts as an attraction between Kate and Curran and slowly grows into a love that definitely has its ups and downs but gets stronger with each book. Until finally, they’ve become a couple that celebrates their differences and supports each other through some pretty fucked up situations. The trials that Kate has to work through keep piling up and I was offended for her with the way some of her friends treated her when she was trying to keep all of them and her family safe. I actually got choked up a few times…

Curran is still Curran but he seemed softer in this book. I mean he’s still a total badass but giving up the title of Beast Lord has definitely been a good move for him. He didn’t seem nearly as tense. He does an exceptional job of supporting Kate even when she’s driving him crazy with the secrets she keeps. No one understands her like he does.

I didn’t want this one to end. I love visiting Kate and Curran in their world….even all fucked up and everything. I like visiting with Julie and Derrick and Jim and Dali and the whole cast. And even though I’m happy with how this one ended, I’m still going to Jones for the next book because they just keep getting better.
