Refrain & Reprise (a Falling Stars novella, #3.5) by Sadie Grubor
Known for his outlandish and often law breaking onstage performances, the fans of Vehicle of Destruction have expectations from America's number one bad boy of rock. Zarek Sisko hates to disappoint, but somethings not the same. Something changed him. That something being her.
The world of opera is surprisingly cutthroat and Gemma Harper, the latest diva in demand, knows this all too well. She's a natural commanding an operatic performance with minimal training, but apparently, pink hair, facial piercings, and being covered in tattoos negates her talent in most professional's eyes. Gemma's fought her entire life to get what she wants and now that she's here, there's no backing down. She's no quitter… well, almost. She quit on him.
Once upon a time, two people from different worlds collided and it was everything they never expected. Until it wasn't and one walked away.
Pretending you don't know someone is exhausting. Acting like someone means absolutely nothing to you isn't easy. Especially when fate keeps throwing them back in your life.
One weekend to Get Rocked in Vegas!
I get that the novella has it’s place in the literary world, but damn…. I really wanted more of these two!
The Falling Stars series is probably one of my top five “rocker” genres. Yeah, Grubor has the groupies, the meaningless sex, the over indulgence, the grit... and, she doesn’t try to make it seem like finding the right guy or the right woman will make everything perfect. They all still have their flaws, their quirks, their predilections. But, they don’t change everything about themselves and become angels. Other than the monogamy… unless it’s a polyamorous thing… whatever, you know what I mean.
I think that may be why I love Zarek so much. He’s pretty much the same ass at the end that he was at the beginning. I really can’t blame Gemma for thinking the worst when she hears some pretty damning words come straight out of his mouth. What I can blame her for is walking away without even discussing anything with him. For that she’s just as culpable, if not more, for their relationship ending.
Gemma is likeable but she doesn’t have the same odd charm that Zarek has. She’s cool as fuck as an opera singer with rock/punk appearance and a penchant for steampunk. If there was actually a show in Vegas with someone like her, I’d have been there! What a great backstory for a female character in the rocker genre. Somebody should get on that!
Zora was a little bundle of awesome. As Zarek’s little sister/assistant she almost stole the show. I can’t think corralling a group of semi-harmless miscreants like the members of VOD can be easy. Zarek alone would have been tough to keep in line. But, I loved how she still had a sense of humor and didn’t let Zarek get away with shit. I’d love to see her story at some point.
So, even though it’s a novella, it packs a ton of story in, which is why I wish it were longer. But, I see lots of good stuff coming from the rest of VOD….please!
